Debris field of Madison Slide area. A 7.7 magnitude earthquake at 11:37 PM, August 17, 1959 caused the side of the mountain to detach and drop into the Madison River Valley killing campers on the valley floor and blocking the outflow of the Madison River.
Earthquake Lake formed from the Madison River when the Madison Slide blocked the outflow. Snags are trees that were in the valley prior to the outflow blockage.
