Peaks of Maroon Formation (red shale) and aspen trees along the edge of the Maroon Amphitheater Area.
The Maroon Bells in the Aspen area above Maroon Lake are formed by Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak over 14,000 feet high. They are topped by layers of oxidized hematite-rich shale that formed during the Permian and Pennsylvanian periods (252-320 Ma) that was raised during the collision of Africa and North America to form Pangea and tilted during the Laramide orogeny (72-40 Ma).
