Bryce Canyon Amphitheater viewed from Bryce Point. Myriad hoodoos formed by differential erosion of Claron Formation sedimentary deposits. Claron formation formed by sedimentary layer erosion 50 million years ago over limestone, sandstone and siltstone and by deposition in a freshwater lake. Lake sediments solidified to Claron Formation, a soft sedimentary layer rich in iron and manganese which imparts the red and pink colors seen in the formation. In the far background is the Table Cliff Plateau.
Bryce Canyon hoodoos. Alternating layers of soft sedimentary rock susceptible to water, freezing and thawing.
